Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986
The Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 protects children and adolescents from unsafe and unlawful employment. The Act prohibits the employment of children below 14 years of age in all occupations and processes, subject to limited legal exceptions. It also prohibits adolescents between 14 and 18 years of age from working in hazardous occupations and processes that may affect their health, safety or development.
Employers must verify workers’ ages, maintain the required employment records and follow prescribed working-hour, rest, weekly-holiday, health and safety requirements for adolescents employed in permitted work. Government authorities may conduct inspections and take legal action against establishments that violate the Act. Proper compliance helps prevent child exploitation, promotes education and creates a safer working environment for young people.
