Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013
The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, commonly known as the POSH Act, protects women from sexual harassment at the workplace. It provides a formal system for preventing inappropriate behaviour, receiving complaints and conducting fair inquiries. The Act covers different types of workplaces, including offices, factories, institutions, hospitals and organisations in both the public and private sectors.
Employers with ten or more employees are required to establish an Internal Committee to handle complaints in a confidential and time-bound manner. Employers must also create a safe working environment, display information about the Act and organise regular awareness programmes for employees and committee members. Proper POSH compliance protects employee dignity, promotes workplace equality and helps organisations reduce legal and reputational risks.
